Dan Murphy

Biography

Dan is the managing partner of MD Law Group, having opened the Edmonton office in 2020 and the new Calgary office in the Summer of 2024. His practice is focused on employment law and civil litigation, with his subsidiary practice areas being real estate, corporate, and criminal.

Prior to opening MD Law Group, Dan was the youngest named partner at his firm Jewer Murphy & Griffin.

Dan is a trial lawyer who has appeared at all levels of Court throughout Ontario, Newfoundland and Labrador, and Alberta, where he has both prosecuted and defended hundreds of criminal law cases. Where most civil litigators may conduct trial a few times a year, Dan has litigated criminal files on a daily basis for years, which has made the transition to employment law and civil litigation a natural one with his skills having easily translated, making him a formidable opponent.

Dan’s employment law and civil litigation experience includes helping clients achieve a resolution with respect to employment contracts, workplace discrimination, severance pay, wrongful dismissal or termination, constructive termination, and much more, by way of negotiation, mediation, and litigation.

As MD Law Group grows, so does Dan’s practice. Dan now provides real estate services to assist clients with the purchase, sale, or re-finance of their home. Whether you are a first-time home buyer or seller or are an investor, he makes sure that you are familiar with the process and your transaction is completed seamlessly.

Criminal law remains to be a practice area of Dan’s, as he spent four years in Newfoundland and Labrador acting as the sole prosecutor on the Burin Peninsula where he gained a deep knowledge of criminal law. He transitioned this to defence work in Toronto and throughout Southwestern Ontario where he successfully defended people charged with offences ranging from common assault to attempted murder.

Litigation Philosophy

Dan is a strong believer in the need for not only a strong advocate; but a need for transparency and mutual respect between a lawyer and their client.

Through Dan’s experience as both a prosecutor and defence lawyer, he understands intimately what is needed to successfully negotiate with prosecution offices and, more importantly, what to do in the even such negotiations fail.

Dan has successfully assisted hundreds of clients through the court system in a transparent, respectful, and knowledgeable manner throughout Ontario and Alberta.

Volunteer

Dan attended at Trinity College Dublin for one year where he volunteered with Amnesty International preparing a report for the United Nations.
